The Hair issue...

As the heading implies...we shall be discussing hair...
so if that is not your cup of tea...you can close the tab now...hehe
This is a lighthearted post...
I have been told i am quite the clown but i do not think i am particularly funny, let me see if i can amuse you today...
Back to the topic...

I strolled into the salon on Saturday to have my hair done...
It was a risk, i was not doing one of my safe styles, i decided to do edgy...
Remember Rihanna in the "shut up and Drive video", that's the hair cut...
I do not know what i was thinking...edgy is not even me...
Anyway, the weave was fixed in and i looked in the mirror, not bad...
Then the stylist starts cutting...
As hair chunks fall, i look up...still not bad...
I am assuming she is doing a great job so i go back to reading my magazine...
After a period of chopping, flat ironing, and blow drying...she is done...
I look in the mirror and a slight squeal leaves my mouth...
This hairstyle is a "shut up and cry"...
I look a mess...hahaha...not hot mess o...damn mess
If i had better sense i would have said, thank you very much now take this crap off my head right now...
But i kept thinking of the time i had just put in and the cost and thought of well, maybe it will grow on me...
All the while i am driving home, i am looking in the mirror thinking how bad can it be...
Since i was home alone, i did not get a second opinion...
Next day i run off to my neighbours...what do you think of this hairdo...
One says oh its beautiful, the other says...not bad...but you look like a bull dog...hahahahahahahaa...Mrs O...always says her mind...
Well what is to be done, before the day is over i have sought the opinion of over five women...
Varied reactions...all say it can be managed...
I do not think anyone goes into a salon and say make me a manageable hairdo...

The Last straw, Monday morning scene...
I walk into the office, My boss says "well i see you got a new cut..."
It doesn't quite suit you does it?
Maybe you should have it coloured?
Thanks Boss, just the confidence booster i needed for the week...
Needless to say, The hair style is off the head...
Women do not like to hear that shit...

So this has me thinking...
How much of a woman's confidence is tied to her hair...
Women spend obscene amounts of money getting their hair braided, pulled, twisted, coloured, cut, all sorts...
To what end...to feel beautiful...
Does this mean we feel less beautiful if the hair isn't done right?
Everyday we are faced with adverts for new weaves and braids...
Brazilian, Indian, Malaysian, Cambodian and all sorts of crazy nationalities.
Places you wouldn't dream of visiting but you are willing to pay to have their hair harvested and brought to you to achieve the dream of silky hair...
Meanwhile underneath your silky fake hair, your natural hair; which would have been relaxed to death, suffers...is begging you for freedom...for air...
Your poor scalp pleads for mercy, bald patches and Alopecia sets in...

Most men do not see their women in that natural hair state, it is too much to bear, After seeing a woman with long bountiful, bouncy mane and BAM!!!...
HBP inducing...is this what i married...lol...
I wish i who writes this had the "liver" as my people will say to leave out my hair but even when i give it a break, it is most times safely under a wig...
Hidden from the humidity which can turn its relaxed state into a frizzy mess...

Ok this is getting too serious, it was meant to be lighthearted...
I just wish we had the "i am not my hair" attitude...
Remember how much buzz Viola Davis from the HELP movie created by carrying her natural hair to the Oscars...
It was almost like a political statement...
Why can't women try that at their wedding (snickers slightly)...hehe
Anyway, as i speak i have just ordered a full head of gorgeous silky mane which will be back on the head at the weekend...
Promising to transform me into a goddess...
A girl gats to do what a girl has to do...
Women sha...
Now whistling...i am not my hair...damn you India Arie...i am my bloody hair...

  1. I really don't understand why women, especially Nigerian women don't appreciate their hair more. I went natural 4 years ago, but had to relax it eventually cos most of the salons here don't know how to treat natural hair and it was tedious managing it. I'm constantly weaving or braiding my hair; but the times I don't, I am quite content to 'wash and set' or do shuku... and yes I rock those styles in public. :-D

I tried to get into the 'Virgin-Hair' craze, but I've failed at it. The thought of another woman's hair on my head, just does strange things to me. Being that most of the women who sell their hair are from poor regions/countries; i.e. Peru, Cambodia, Mongolia etc. I sense that they may be a bit resentful about selling their hair to feed themselves. But this is just my opinion and I am prone to overthink things. :-D
